New year, new me

Pie chart of Northwest High school resolutions

Everyone has something new that they want to accomplish, and with the start of the new year, it’s the perfect time to give your goals a try.

I asked 100 students from Northwest High School what their resolutions were  in order to get a feel for what the most common New Year’s resolutions were for 2022.

29% of people said that their goal this year was to do better in school.

Students planned to study harder, and go tutoring throughout the week to get help with the classes they are struggling in.  Six  people even said that their goal was to graduate.

25% of people said that this year, their goal had something to do with eating better or going to the gym. This was the second most common response that I received. Students said that to achieve their healthy goals they would try and work out evenly throughout the week, eat healthier food  and drink more water.

Some even went as far as to set a goal for the amount of weight they want to bench press. The numbers are between 185 and 230 pounds by the end of the year.

The next most common resolution for 2022, with 14%, was to have some kind of personal growth.   This goal was pretty commonly stated as being more motivated or trying to be a better person. They wanted to become more organized mentally and physically. These people planned to listen to their gut and talk to more people. A few other tactics included using an agenda to keep track of what’s planned throughout the week and talking to family more to try and create a deeper connection.

Other resolutions consisted of being nicer, making more money to buy things that they wanted  or just not having a resolution at all.

Sticking with your goals can  be beneficial for you.  When you make a resolution normally, you have to self evaluate and choose something that you can do better. It’s a time that we can reflect on our lives and decide what we can change.

Ways to keep up with your goal is to keep it realistic. Don’t set a standard for yourself that you know you can’t achieve within a year. Try setting a goal that is achievable  and manageable for you.

If you’re really struggling to  keep up with your goal, try making a plan. Set up an outline of how you’re going to achieve your goal. If your resolution is to lose weight, set out times to go to the gym and plan to drink more water. If you know what you’re going to do, you’ll be more likely to achieve it.

Most importantly, don’t beat yourself up.  Some goals take time to achieve, and it’s not gonna happen overnight. Sometimes we make mistakes. Instead of deciding it’s  impossible or feeling terrible that you did something wrong, don’t give up; just keep trying to figure it out, and eventually it will be easier and results will come.

Now that you have a goal, the only thing left to do is complete it!
