Have you ever thought about struggles people go through behind a mask of happiness? Eating disorders and body disorders are a struggle for many people.
Eating disorders are a psychological issue of going through abnormal eating habits that aren’t healthy. Anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorders are some examples of this type. On the other hand, body dysmorphia disorder is a mental disorder where you are unhappy with how your body looks. It would be like looking at your body in the mirror and seeing a person you don’t want to see.
According to a survey conducted in 2020, 25-39% of the teen population voted that they were going through these disorders. It’s very common nowadays for people to go through this type of disease. Feeling confident and beautiful is very hard for many.
A junior at Northwest Guilford, Emily Chen is one person who has dealt with an eating disorder. “This is hard to open up about, but there was a certain period of time where I was unhappy with my body and wanted to change the way I was. I went through awful habits of not eating so that I could look better,” Chen said.
It’s hard for people who are going through these disorders to open up. Wanting to change how they look and appear is a main factor of why people go through this.
The effect of social media and celebrities have taken an impact on many teens. Scrolling through Instagram and seeing “insta perfect models” with an alluring body causes many to feel insecure. It’s very sad that such an unrealistic body is portrayed as the “average.”
Surprisingly, many celebrities have also gone through disorders. Megan Fox opened up about her struggle with having body dysmorphia. The disorder had taken a toll on her for a long time, which had caused her to obsess over her flaws.
“I didn’t want to be seen, I didn’t want to have to take a photo, do a magazine, walk a carpet, I didn’t want to be seen in public at all because the fear, and the belief, and the absolute certainty that I was going to be mocked,” Fox said.
Fox had opened up in an interview how she was a person with deep insecurities.
Another celebrity, Khloe Kardashian, is an example of someone who has an eating disorder. She often felt like the “ugly” sister and compared herself. This shows that even celebrities who people think have an “perfect image,” have a struggling side.
In a positive light, most people who go through this disorder come back healthy again.
“I’m doing better now and I’ve learned to change in a healthy way,” Chen says.
It is relieving to hear that some people who go through eating and body disorders have a way to overcome and change for the better.
At Northwest Guilford High, there is a mental health club open to anyone wanting to talk. In there, it is a relaxed environment where you can discuss sensitive topics and issues without feeling uncomfortable. Don’t hesitate to go and open up.
