What is your favorite thing about soccer?

“The feeling of excitement upon scoring a goal, winning a game, or beating an opponent in a 1 on 1,” Van Duin said.

When did you start playing this sport?

“I started playing soccer when I was four, I played for SDO Bussum in the Netherlands,” Van Duin said.

Were you good when you started?

“I like to think so, I have played a year above my age group for the majority of my youth,” Van Duin said.

Do you have any post-game rituals?

“I don’t have any post game rituals,” Van Duin said. “Before every game during the playing of the national anthem, I always say a quick prayer.”

How do you prepare for a big game?

“When we start warming up we all begin to focus and stop messing around,” Van Duin said. “We do our best to remain focused on the game and hold each other accountable.”

How has the sport changed over the years?

“When I was younger I often played in the midfield or as an attacking player,” Van Duin said. “In recent years I’ve come to play center back.”

Do you still enjoy the sport years after you started?

“Absolutely, it’s a way for me to stay connected with my friends and compete with others,” Van Duin said.

How do you manage school and a varsity sport?

“It can difficult, I often spend late nights doing homework or studying for tests and quizzes,” Van Duin said. “Whenever I have free time I try to get as much work done ahead of time so I won’t be too busy the night before assignments are due.”
