Brennan Berry is a senior on the varsity volleyball team, with one of the most important positions–the outside hitter. The outside hitter is responsible for hitting and blocking the ball during defense and they are the main hitter while on offense. Juggling a varsity sport and advanced classes may be hard but Berry finds a way to still enjoy the activity.

What is your favorite thing about volleyball?
“I made a lot of friends from playing the sport,” Berry said. “I like how it is a team effort, it’s not something you can do by yourself.”

When did you start playing the sport?
“I started at the end of sixth grade,” Berry said. “One of my friends played so I decided to join a recreational team, before this I had never even touched a volleyball.”

Were you good at the sport when you first started?
“I was not good when I started,” Berry said. “I was afraid of the ball and would step away whenever it came near me.”

Do you have any post-game rituals?
“After we have long games, my dad will take me to cookout and we get milkshakes,” Berry said.

How does your team get ready for a big game?
“Before our games we do an ‘I believe chant’ in the locker rooms, everyone outside can hear us screaming, it’s supposed to intimidate the other team,” Berry said.

How has the sport changed over the years?
“It’s a lot different compared to when I started,” Berry said. “It’s a lot more competitive now.”

Do you still enjoy the sport years after you started?
“I enjoy the competitiveness and being a part of a team,” Berry said.

How do you manage school and a varsity sport?
“Balancing school work and volleyball is definitely hard,” Berry said. “I try to do homework before the games and in my free time.”
