A select few of Northwest’s cheerleaders can boast a World Championship title after competing in Orlando, FL at the ESPN Wide World of Sports. Seniors Kaitlyn Crews and Cassidy Davis, sophomore Carley Pope and freshman Emma Craig are members of Lady Lux at Cheer Extreme in Kernersville, coached by Courtney Smith-Pope. They cheer in the International Open Non-Tumbling Level 5 division.

“It’s brand new this year,” Crews said. “My coach, Courtney, actually helped make the division for people like me who can’t just get their tumbling but are better at stunting.”

Lady Lux had their first practice of the season in May 2018, finishing the season at Worlds at the end of April 2019. Lady Lux was undefeated this season; they hold the title of Triple Crown Champions.

The first day of competition was a little nerve-racking; for most of the girls on the team, it was their first time competing at Worlds. The team had a few points deducted after their routine; however, scores from the first day of competition don’t matter the second day, which allows teams to have clean slates the second day.

The second day of competition improved significantly for Lady Lux. They performed one of the best routines that they had ever put on the floor, according to Davis. Once placements were being called at the end of the competition, the anticipation rose among the team.

“We were all holding hands,” Crews said. “We were all having to stand up and so we all collapsed to the ground at the same time, knowing that everything we’d worked for during the past year was worth it.”

After it was announced that the girls from Lady Lux were World Champions, Davis describes feeling “so much joy and pure happiness.” It was a “dream come true” for the team who had dedicated so much time and effort into their sport over the course of the season.

“It was unreal,” Crews said.
