Senior Meredith Sinkler is preparing for the second annual “Beating Cancer for the Long Run” charity 5k; she has to gather sponsors, get vendors, collect money, ship t-shirts and promote the race to the school. While this requires a lot of dedication and hardwork, it is not without great merits for an even greater cause.

“All money raised will go to Wesley Long Cancer Center,” Sinkler said. “There will be a bake sale, games, music and food trucks.”

The race will be on April 13 at 10 a.m. on the Northwest Cross Country Course.Tickets are sold in the commons during all lunches, before school and online–the link will be provided below.

“If you would like to help,” Sinkler said, “please donate snacks or water. We’re also looking for volunteers, runners and sponsors.”

The race is an amazing combination of athletics and service as it unifies students through a cause much bigger than an individual; however, it is also a cause that has touched individuals at our school.

“I have students whose family members are treated at (Wesley Long) Cancer Center,” 5k advisor Kathryn Beach said. “I’ve seen how it has a positive effect (due to) excellent care for family members. That’s why I would like to support (Wesley Long Cancer Center) through this race.”

Some may feel helpless in a battle against such a pervasive disease, but this race gives faculty and students the opportunity to fight back in a simple, yet meaningful, way.

“We need volunteers to seek sponsors,” Beach said. “We need volunteers to share information with the community. We need people to register and donate money. More than anything else, we need you to spread the word and care.”
