Every year in December, Northwest clubs, sports and classes get together to host an event called Christmas Families for Mary’s House. A lot of preparation an work goes into making this night successful.

Interested clubs and teams get assigned a family to take care of. They are given a list of who the family members are and what they want for Christmas. Those who participate in this event try to make sure that they can get almost all of the gifts that they can get. To do this, they ask for donations.

“(Spanish teacher) Señora Stencler and I have prepared by speaking to (Spanish National Honor Society) members and asking that each of them donate an item from the list or if they are financially unable to do so, to donate five dollars because we understand that a lot of our members are part of various clubs,” senior Meme Kapoor said.

After the clubs get donations, many of the club leaders or members go out and buy the necessary gifts. The student council is going out on the weekend to buy presents or they are asking the leaders to buy gifts on their own if they are unable to shop with the group.

“With student council, we are going out with some of the money we have raised to buy some of the gifts and things they have asked for,” senior Wyatt Coon said.

The wish list ranges from clothing items to toys to even TVs. To make sure the club can get most of the requests, they use ways to organize who has which item.

“I made a Signup Genius for the lacrosse team so people can sign up for specific gifts,” Coon said.

The members meet up to have a wrapping party after all the gifts are bought. A lot of times it’s in the classroom of the club adviser, but for the boys’ lacrosse team they are meeting at Coon’s house.

On the day of the event, it usually starts off with a dinner and then moves to the gifts. This gives each club and the family to get to know each other.

“First, we went to the cafeteria and ate dinner with them and afterward, we went into the room with all the presents and there were a ton of presents everywhere for each family,” Coon said. “We showed our family their presents and it was cool because they had excited looks on their faces and they got to open the presents.”

This year’s Christmas Families event will be on Dec. 19.
