Hearts are pounding as fast as the ball down the court. Players shake out last minute butterflies from their stomachs. The first game of the season is about to begin.

Since Oct 31 the Varsity basketball teams have been practicing hard for this moment on Nov 27. The teams played their first home game against Eastern Guilford High school.

“Practices have been going good, I keep learning more everyday,” Sophomore guard Aniston Greene said.

This is Greene’s first year on Varsity, along with freshmen Brooke Anthony, Hannah Parker, Chelsey McMillian and juniors Yasmine Abdelhqaq and Gabby Martin. The upperclassmen and returners are helping them improve everyday by pointing them in the right direction.

Once again, the girls have a “target” on their back after two back to back state championships.

“I am excited,” Greene said, “(based on the two jamborees) theres always things we can do better, but I think we’re pretty strong.”

After the game, senior guard Johnny Pagano is optimistic about the 2018-2019 season.

“I thought it was good, we started to come together,” Pagano said, “even though I’m the only senior and the team is young.”

The boys defeated Eastern Guilford 63-54 and the girls won 54-31.

Even though Pagano is the only senior this year, he ensures that the team is close.

“I’ve never played on a team where I was the oldest person,” Pagano said. “but I’m not excluded; we’re all friends.”

In addition to practice six days a week, the boys are in first period team sports to further improve their game with head coach Lee Reavis.

With the constant practice and determination, both teams are looking at a good season.

“(We will improve from last year); we’re looking to win a couple playoff games and win the conference championship (again),” Pagano said.
