Thanksgiving is the time of year to gather with your close family, friends and peers or coworkers to look back on the year and reflect on the things you are thankful for. But Thanksgiving is also about the food, here are some unique twist on classic Thanksgiving foods.

 

Garlic stuffed mushrooms (via happyfoodstube.com)

While cooking for the final meal, watching football or socializing with your family, an appetizer like garlic stuffed mushrooms is a good starter before your Thanksgiving meal.

Ingredients:

  • 20 Button Mushrooms
  • 1 cup Grated Cheddar Cheese (120g)
  • 2 tbsp Unsalted Butter, at room temperature
  • 5 Garlic Cloves
  • ⅛ cup Fresh Flat Leaf Parsley Salt & Black Pepper to Taste

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl combine minced garlic, finely chopped parsley, pepper, cheese and butter.
  2. Clean the mushrooms and remove the stems. Do this carefully so you don’t break the mushrooms.
  3. Season each mushroom with salt and black pepper and fill with the prepared garlic stuffing.
  4. Place them onto a baking tray lined with a sheet of baking parchment.
  5. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F/190°C for 15 minutes.

 

Potato Casserole

Mash potatoes are a classic at the Thanksgiving dinner table, but this cheesy take on potatoes will have family members coming back for more.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pint (2 cups) sour cream
  • 1 can (10 3/4 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • ½ cup butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon garlic salt
  • 1 cup chopped onions
  • 1 bag (30 oz) shredded hash brown potatoes
  • 2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese (8 oz)

Instructions:

  1. Heat oven to 350°F.
  2. In large bowl, combine 1-pint (2 cups) sour cream, 1 can (10 3/4 oz) cream of mushroom soup, 1/2 cup melted butter, 1 tablespoon garlic salt, 1 cup chopped onions, 1 bag (30 oz) shredded hash brown potatoes and 2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese (8 oz); stir until well blended.
  3. Pour into ungreased 13×9-inch (3-quart) glass baking dish.
  4. Bake 45 minutes.

 

Grilled Turkey (via allrecipes.com)

All over the United States, turkeys are cooked in various ways, broiled, fried, smoked, but grilling your turkey is the ways to go. It keeps the oven clear for other food and leaves the meat with crispy skin and juicy meat.

Ingredients:

  • 12 pounds whole turkey
  • 2 cups water
  • 3 tablespoons chicken bouillon powder
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon poultry seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon chopped parsley
  • 1 teaspoon paprika

Instructions:

  1. Prepare an outdoor grill for indirect medium heat, and lightly oil grate. Rinse turkey, and pat dry.
  2. Place turkey breast side down on the prepared grill. Sear turkey on both sides until skin is golden to dark brown.
  3. In a large roasting pan, mix together the water, bouillon powder, garlic powder, onion powder, poultry seasoning, parsley, and paprika.
  4. Place turkey breast side down in the roasting pan. Scoop the pan mixture over the turkey. Cover tightly with foil and place on grill.
  5. Grill 3 to 4 hours, until the internal temperature of the thigh reaches 180 degrees F (85 degrees C). Remove turkey from grill and let stand 15 minutes before carving.

 

Pecan Pie (via Karo)

Thanksgiving is the time for pie, instead of the traditional pumpkin pie try this sweet pecan pie that will fulfill your sweet tooth cravings.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Karo light or dark corn syrup
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon Pure Vanilla Extract
  • 1 1/2 cups pecans
  • 1 (9-inch) unbaked or frozen deep-dish pie crust

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. In a mixing bowl, mix corn syrup, eggs, sugar, butter, and vanilla using a spoon. Stir in pecans. Pour filling into pie crust.
  • Bake on center rack of oven until center reaches 200°F and springs back when tapped lightly, about 55 to 70 minutes.

 

Banana Oat Cake for Dogs

Don’t forget the animals! On Thanksgiving, while you’re scarfing down turkey, make sure your dog has a treat with this healthy banana oat cake.

Ingredients:

  • 2 ripe bananas, mashed
  • 4 tbsp honey
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups water
  • 3 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup cream cheese
  • 2/3 cup peanut butter

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Using nonstick spray, coat an 8-inch cake pan and set aside.
  3. In a bowl, mix the bananas, 3 tablespoons honey, egg and water together until combined.
  4. Then stir in the flour, baking powder and oats.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
  6. Bake the cake for 1 hour.
  7. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 30 minutes before transferring to a rack to cool completely.
  8. As the cake is cooling on the rack, mix the peanut butter, cream cheese, and remaining honey in a bowl until thoroughly incorporated to create the frosting.
  9. Using a spoon or spatula, spread the peanut butter frosting over the cake.
