“Hey, Y’all.”

Senior Wyatt Coon is known for his introductions in the morning announcements. As a student-body officer, he reads club announcements, but he does it with his own added flair. Recently, he turned this popular one-liner into a T-shirt.

“My family grew up in Summerfield,” Coon said. “It is just something funny (and natural) that we say.”

The t-shirts were not originally Coon’s idea. His father owns a t-shirt company and decided to surprise him.

“He knew that the ‘Hey, Y’all’ on the announcements was something funny that I did,” Coon said. “So I came home, and there was just a ‘Hey, Y’all’ shirt sitting on the table. I showed it to my friends and they all told me that I should go with it and that people would want to buy it.”

Coon’s friends were right; he has already sold roughly 80 shirts with more being shipped. Some people in Northwest love the strange introduction that starts off their mornings.

“I love it so much,” junior Jackson Reeves said. “It is just an easy thing to meme, and he is donating the (t-shirt) proceeds to charity. Wyatt Coon is a beautiful man.”

Coon sells the shirts for $5 each during class periods and fourth lunch.

“I’m raising it for cancer research,” Coon said. “I’m not sure exactly which one right now, but all (the money will definitely) go to cancer research.”

Although it is most notably a joke that brings a smile to people’s faces, the ‘Hey, Y’all’ on the announcements also serves as a unifying force among students.

“It is a good idea because it is something that brings people together,” junior Mary Yin said. “It is just pretty cool.”

Reactions like Reeves and Yin pleasantly surprised Coon as he expected it to just be something between him and his friends.

“The idea was kind of my signature (that could) create some school unity and spirit,” Coon said. “It definitely turned out way better than I expected.”
