This past summer, Donald Trump directed the Pentagon and Department of Defense to take steps to create the “Space Force.”

The Space Force is a proposed 6th branch of the military that would assume all duties that the Air Force conducts in space, which starts above the mesosphere.

“We should be preparing for the future,” Senior Brennan Maynard said about implementing the Space Force. “We also should not be diminishing our safety.”

However, she also raised some issues of how it could lead to increased tensions abroad.

“This is going to escalate the situation even more,” she said. “We must be working to de-escalate it. If we start militarizing space, Russia is also going to want to.”

There’s is also the concern of funding the Space Force.

“It’s going to take a lot of money to fund a whole new branch of the military,” Senior Ruby Bradford said.

Beyond the actual funding it, some raise questions if it’s appropriate to be directing funds to the creation of the Space Force.

“Putting money into the Space Force is irrelevant because we have no real enemies there,” Senior Alana Roy said. “NASA does not get enough money from the government.”

Furthermore, there are potential problems with assigning the duties of the Space Force.

“The air force is upset about the creation of the Space Force, because a lot of the responsibilities of the Air Force will be taken away by it,” Bradford said.

Public opinion on whether or not the Space Force should be implemented is mixed. A poll conducted on students at Northwest found that a slim majority of the students do not support the creation of a Space Force.

Bradford gives a final weigh-in on if it should be created

“No,” she said. “If anything we should just be expanding the Air Force by creating a department for space operations under it.”

How was your survey taken, was it an SRS, was it a stratified random sample, because it was not a census? Asking for a fried.

Why. Just why. We don’t need a new branch of the military to do what one is already doing.

I absolutely love space, but now is not the time to focus on it. Money doesn’t need to wasted when what it’s going to accomplish is already happening.

And considering the obvious implications with a name like “Space Force”: we don’t even know if anything else sentient exists besides us (and at the very least nothing surrounding us for quite a fair distance is sentient), so why in the world are we wasting time and money to protect ourselves from these threats we don’t even know exist?
