Congress brawls over SCOTUS nominee: Should Kavanaugh be allowed to proceed?
October 3, 2018
Judge Brett Kavanaugh has been accused of sexual assault following his recent nomination for the supreme court. Accuser Christine Ford reports that the incident occurred when they were in high school nearly 35 years ago. Kavanaugh vehemently denied the allegations.
This past Thursday, both Ford and Kavanaugh testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on their recount of the events Ford alleges against Kavanaugh. During these hearings, both Ford and Kavanaugh delivered poignant testimonies. Many people are torn between the two opposing sides and are not sure what to think of the conflict.
Kavanaugh accusations lack credibility
Imagine you just spent all of last night studying for a test. You worked all night long and put everything you had into making a good grade on the test tomorrow. The next day you take the test and you know that with all your preparation you made an A. However, the day before the teacher gives back the test another student accuses you of cheating and suddenly your grade is in jeopardy, your reputation is ruined, and your parents are screaming at you.
This is very similar to the situation Judge Brett Kavanaugh is in right now. The Democrats have derailed his nomination just days before the senate was set to vote on his nomination.
Many people have claimed this nothing but a political hitjob and that the poor man is innocent.
“I don’t think he did it,” junior Sarah Lamb said. “I think (the Democrats) are trying to keep Republicans out of that position (the open supreme court seat).”
The main reason people are drawing this conclusion is that Kavanaugh’s accuser, Dr. Christine Ford, is unable to produce evidence and unable to muster up the finer details of the encounter. Because of this, the situation has become a battle of credibility as it’s one person’s word over the other.
Social studies teacher James Thompson weighs in on the credibility of Kavanaugh.
“He seemed credible to me,” Thompson said. “He seemed upset and angry. Which if he’s innocent of these (allegations), his responses will seem like a natural human reaction to this situation.”
In order to investigate further, a FBI investigation has been opened, but this is unnecessary as we already know that some of the allegations were false and this situation doesn’t mandate such a response.
“There have been some false accusations,” Thompson said. “This is a job interview, not a court of law. We need to weigh all his past 32 years of work.”
It’s time we drop this investigation that will bear no fruit and vote on this man’s confirmation. His name and family have been tarnished enough: now is the time for the Democrats to lay it to rest.
Ford’s accusation unjustly scrutinized
As Christine Blasey Ford gave a devastating and disturbing recount of the assault, the Republicans and Democrats watched on the live broadcast to form their opinions on the subject.
In cases like this there is not much evidence to support either testimony due to the time that has passed. The accuser and accused are being judged primarily off who is the most convincing and what little evidence contradicts their statements.
“Anything like this should be looked into,” sophomore Caitlin Rigsbee said. “Just because they don’t have a lot of evidence doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.”
The government agreed and has since ordered a week-long FBI investigation into the incident. This is a relatively short amount of time compared to most investigations, but this is a time sensitive matter due to the upcoming voting period. Even if the FBI does find ample evidence to convict either side the Senate is still the one who makes the final decision on the matter.
This time frame is too limited, and will have consequences concerning the amount and quality of the information that can be found.
“I think if it is true he should be convicted,” junior Madison Bradley said.
Sexual assault cases have been becoming more and more prevalent in government, yet they are still not taken as seriously as they should be.
Ford seemed visibly emotional and traumatized when giving her statement which made people question their previous beliefs on the case.
Though some issues brought up weren’t always answered with precise clear responses, this is to be expected from a victim of sexual assault. It is also expected when dealing with a case that happened quite some time ago.
“The situation should definitely be considered and looked into,” Rigsbee said. “Whether its a government official or anyone else this is still a problem.”
If Kavanaugh is telling the truth, his temperament and attitude during this event foreshadow his future actions if he continues in politics.
