Melvin Diggs is a senior at Northwest High and is planning on attending Eastern Kentucky University in the fall. Diggs spends most of his time preaching and speaking to youth groups at Calvary Church.

When asked what makes you who you are, Diggs responded by saying his childhood and Jesus.

“When I was younger, I remember going up to West Virginia to see family,” said senior Diggs. “We would always all go fishing, which was a lot of fun. I also remember working long hard days in the yard and attending family funerals.”

But Diggs’ family didn’t have a huge influence on his religion. Instead, he took it upon himself to get involved in church.

“Before my grandad went under for open-heart surgery, he told my mom to make sure that we all went to church,” said senior Diggs. “Thank goodness he didn’t pass away but, whether those were his last words or not, I wanted to honor them.”

Diggs’ faith plays a huge role in his life. Diggs gave his first sermon last Sunday on April 8th at Calvary Church.

“I broke out in song like crazy people do, but it was good,” said senior Diggs.

During his sermon, Diggs focused on these questions: Who do you run to? When you run to where you’re running, whose hand do you hold?

“It made me feel like I was doing what I was supposed too,” said senior Diggs. “It just felt right.”

Jesus has impacted Diggs’ life and has helped him get to where he is today.

“I would not be where I am today without my faith in Jesus Christ,” said senior Diggs.

Diggs wants to continue being an instrumental part in his church and to keep giving sermons that will positively affect others.

“I realize that I’m not living my life for me,” said senior Diggs. “My life is now dedicated to everyone I know as well as those who I encounter. It is dedicated to making everyone else happy and brightening their days,” said senior Diggs.
