With snow on the ground and light displays on lawns, the holiday season has officially arrived at Northwest High School. During this time of year, stores release special seasonal items to celebrate, like clothes, decorations, and foods.

Some of these food items are drinks, like eggnog, hot chocolate, and coffees.

“I like eggnog,” junior Emma Palmenteri said.

Eggnog is a traditional holiday drink that is made with milk, egg whites, cream, and egg yolks. Occasionally it is instilled with alcoholic drinks, but it also can be made so that minors can enjoy it as well. Starbucks offers an Eggnog Latte that does not contain any alcohol.

Another popular drink is hot chocolate. Restaurants such as Starbucks are offering seasonal versions of this drink with extra ingredients, such as the Peppermint Mocha, Toasted White Chocolate latte, and the Gingerbread Latte. Packets of hot chocolate can also be picked up at stores, if one feels like brewing it themselves.

Regular chocolate, such as in candy bars and special boxes, is also in season.

“I just really like chocolate,” junior Emily Dunn said, referring to both liquid and solid chocolate alike.

Another favorite snack is peppermint bark. Peppermint bark is a treat that can be made at home with the help of several online recipes that are easy to follow consisting of chocolate and peppermint.

“It’s the best,” sophomore Valerie Rosesouthern said. “Me and my sister love peppermint bark.”

Peppermint bark can also be bought in bags pre-made in stores such as Target for under $10.

There are local snacks also that can be purchased, such as Moravian cookies. These cookies are made in Winston Salem and are modelled after the treat made in Old Salem. These cookies are known for being especially thin and filled with spices.

Places like Fresh Market even have their own line of food and drink products that are made just for the holiday season. One of these is snowflake coffee, which adds a little wintery flavor to the morning. They also offer seasonal sweets and snack bars.

Even if the product is not specially made for the season, some companies make their products go through a holiday makeover in order to match their seasonal counterparts on the shelves.

Students make their treats at home. Baking cookies for Santa Claus is a tradition in certain households. Other have cookie-making competitions. There are plenty of recipes online for those who want to mix it up and try something new. This activity also allows families to bond over a shared process.

Some students, however, believe that whether the food made for the holiday season or not is what makes it important, but rather that the holiday is what makes it important.

“We get to be at home, and I like eating food,” junior Anjanee Johnson said. “It’s a great time of year.”
