English teacher Monica Clark ran the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) last Thursday on October 26th in Washington D.C.

The Marine Corps Marathon’s mission is to showcase physical fitness and produce community goodwill in order to promote the high standards and discipline of the Marine Corps. It is one of the largest marathons in the United States and the world.

“There were thousands of people cheering, it was crazy and exciting, but it also made it hard to run because of the crowds,” Clark said. “While running, I passed monuments, people with signs, food, and confetti, which really made the experience memorable”.

The MCM has been recognized as “Best Marathon in the Mid-Atlantic”, “Best for Families”, and “Best for Beginners”. Runners from all 50 states and more than 60 countries participate in this marathon.

MCM is the largest marathon in the world that doesn’t offer prize money. Instead, it celebrates the honor, courage, and commitment of all the runners.

In order to run a marathon, intense training is in order. Preparing for a marathon, after all, is not an easy task. It is a huge commitment, and for most, it demands vast amounts of energy — physical, mental and emotional.

“I followed a training plan, running five times a week, running different distances each day; for example, I ran long distances on Sunday and hills and speed work on another day,” Clark said.

Even though Clark thoroughly enjoyed this marathon, she plans on participating in smaller marathons due to the overwhelming amounts of people as well as the large amount of time it takes to train. She plans to run a marathon soon in either Charlottesville or Virginia Beach.

“Making the decision to run a marathon is a really big commitment because it takes so much time, and it is a lot of work to get your body ready,” Clark said.
