In today’s world, technology is advancing at light speed, especially in the classroom. Many teachers use technology as a means of communicating with their students and as a way to give out assignments. Although many students have access to technologies like computers, phones and printers at all times, not all of them do. What happens to the students who can’t type up a paper at home because they don’t have a computer at home, or can’t print it out until they get to school?

Students who do not have access to a computer at home are put at a disadvantage when it comes to online assignments. Some teachers use online sites such as Edmodo and Moodle to give out tasks, and students without computers have to stay after school or come in early to use a school computer. The same goes when they have to write an essay or a research paper.

“I feel that technology can help bridge between learning at home and school, through communication with the teacher,” Latin teacher Parker Jackson said.

Jackson uses both Edmodo and Remind 101 to communicate with her students and get information to them. She uses these means so students can ask questions and get answers directly from home. This is a great way to help students who need additional tutoring, but students who do not have access to a phone or compute simply do not get the advantages that other students do.

Not all teachers implement technology into their classes, and teachers who do give assignments online will give them out in advance to give students time to find a means of completing it if they do not have access. The school has lots of resources to help give these students the technology they need to be successful in school.

“Students without access to technology are at a disadvantage because many teachers require students to print assignments at home, and for those without computers or printers have to take more time out of their already stressful day to find alternative methods to get that assignment,” junior Brooke Toffel said.
