Both the boys’ and girls’ indoor track teams took second place at the Guilford County Championship on Jan. 28. The meet took place in Winston-Salem where the Vikings competed against all other high schools in the county.

“It’s a really fun sport,” senior Cal Liska said. “Everyone is really laid back, chill and pretty accepting.”

Indoor track is made up of 14 separate events, which includes the 55-meter dash, the 55-meter hurdles, the long jump, the pole vault and the shot-put, to name a few.

The team is led by science teacher Mitchell Smith, who has been coaching since last year and says this season has been a rebuilding year.

“We’re working on improving,” Smith said. “We lost a lot of talent last year, so it was a pleasant surprise to get second.”

Outdoor track just began Wednesday and will have its own county championship in April. To anyone thinking of joining, Smith has a few suggestions.

“We like to have people with a good attitude and a good work ethic, and we’re willing to work with pretty much anybody who meets those qualifications,” Smith said.

At last year’s Outdoor County Championship, the Northwest boys received third place and girls received fifth, which was an improvement over the year before.

“We’re hoping to do better than last year,” Smith said.
