Roe v. Wade, the court decision made 45 years ago that has caused the death of over 60 million unborn children in the United States. This court case has been protested every year by thousands of pro-life advocates in Washington, D.C. since the decision made in 1974 via the March for Life.

The March for Life’s mission is to provide all Americans with a place to testify to the beauty of life and the dignity of each human. The march has grown over the years starting with only 20,000 participants, to now more than 250,000.

The 2018 March For life took place on Friday, Jan. 19. The march rally began at 12 p.m.; some featured speakers were House Speaker Paul Ryan, U.S. Representative Jaime Herrera Beutler and United States President Donald Trump, via satellite video. Trump isthe first president to speak at the march in the 45 years since the supreme court ruling.

At 1 pm the march began, with a group of students from Alabama leading the march. Many different groups joined from all over the United states, some groups even came from around the world. The march route began on Constitution Avenue and ended in front of the Supreme court and the US Capital, where protest continued after the march ended.

The marche’s theme for 2018 was “Love Saves Lives.” The theme was inspired from the love of God and mothers doubting love for their unborn children. Almost all who were marching had signs representing the theme.

In addition to the march, a youth rally and mass was held at The Capital One Arena. The rally and mass were run by the Archdiocese of Washington and began at 6:30 a.m.; speakers were Emily Wilson and Ryan Bomberger. The music was performed by Out of Darkness, the music ministry of Adam and Lori Ubowski.

Being a second-year attendee of the March for Life and Youth Rally-Mass, I can say being surrounded by people who are all defending the same cause is a powerful experience. I plan to attend the march for years to come in hopes of making an impact.
